Head of M&A Underwriting
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an underwriting background from an M&A insurer. Aviva are seeking a Head of M&A Underwriting to play an integral role in the execution of warranties & indemnities, tax & contingency underwriting and be a key part of the Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) insurance function.
Business context – Global Corporate & Specialty (GCS) is a GI business that handles large business risks (customers with c£100m+ turnover businesses and for M&A, an enterprise value upwards of £150m). Its core product lines are Property, Motor & Liability as well as Specialty Risks (Marine, Engineering, Financial lines, Latent defects etc), Wholesale Property & Multinational insurance. GCS has an ambition to grow organically in the UK and in the wider Global market from £1.5bn to £2.5-3bn by 2028, with a sub 94% COR – to be the go-to insurer for large and complex risks, supported by 21st century systems and processes.
Aviva introduced “smart-working” in 2020, and the person in this role can be based anywhere in the UK, as long as they are comfortable travelling to our London offices weekly.
A bit about the job:
Within this role you will be Reporting to the Underwriting Director of Financial Lines. The Head of Underwriting for Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) is responsible for leading and running the underwriting activities in this specialised field. This pivotal role requires extensive experience in both the Company and Lloyd’s market, with a deep understanding of Warranties & Indemnity, Tax & Contingence insurance. The role holder is responsible for developing and implementing the M&A underwriting strategy, leading a team of underwriters, encouraging positive relationships with brokers and clients, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This senior position demands outstanding leadership, critical thinking, and in-depth knowledge of underwriting within the M&A sector.
Skills and experience we’re looking for:
Excellent financial technical & analytical skills with the ability to interpret contracts, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions
Proven track record underwriting M&A transactions
Comfortable working in an environment which has high expectations to deliver responsibilities – at times highly pressurised
Proven leadership experience, including leading underwriting teams and getting results
Strong relationship-building and communication skills to interact effectively with brokers, clients, and internal collaborators
